Garcia to start for South Carolina against Vols.

Garcia to start for South Carolina against Vols. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is sticking with Stephen Garcia at quarterback.

Spurrier said after the team’s final full practice of the week Thursday that his freshman passer would make his second career start Saturday against Tennessee.

Garcia’s first start came two weeks ago against LSU. He helped the Gamecocks take a 17-10 lead at halftime, but the Tigers rallied for a 24-17 win and sacked Garcia six times.

He threw for 215 yards and a touchdown against LSU. He also had an interception late in the game that helped the Tigers hold their lead.

Spurrier said he hoped Garcia could play the whole game. If he struggles, Spurrier says backup Chris Smelley will be ready to step in.

Florida State suspends WR Surrency for Saturday.

Florida State receiver Corey Surrency will miss Saturday’s game at Georgia Tech for disciplinary reasons.

It’s the second time in as many weeks that coach Bobby Bowden has suspended a receiver. Freshman Bert Reed missed last Saturday’s win over Virginia Tech for skipping classes.

No reason was given for Surrency’s suspension on Thursday.

Surrency, a 24-year-old junior college transfer, had three touchdown catches in Florida State’s first two games of the season.

The No. 16 Seminoles (6-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) share first place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division with Maryland.
